re: Computer Malfunction
by Lobber on Mon Jul 29, 2013 10:15 am
The laptop I have been using to play EQ did not boot up Sunday afternoon.
All I get is a blank screen, and a power light that intermittently flashes off and back on again every minute or so. A red light on the front of the laptop also flashes off and back on at the same time as the power light flash on and off.
Holding F8 or tapping F11 during this process does nothing.
So for the moment I am without a computer to play EQ.
I am writing this from my work computer (and hoping not to get caught doing so either).
I would appreciate suggestions as to what laptop to buy to run EQ and maybe other games as well, something that will last a while. Something within a budget of less than a thousand dollars, preferably within $700. So something around that. The laptop that died is many years old, had a single gig of ram, and isn't worth resurrecting.
Please advise.

Pretty much any laptop/desktop for sale these days can easily handle EQ. I would base your decision on other programs you might need to run.

Sorry to hear about the laptop. I figured something had happened when we didn't see you online! Hope you're back soon!

I'm still shopping for a computer.
I'm tempted to wait a week or two so I have more money to buy with.
Besides, it's almost August and I have to pay rent before buying a laptop.

hate to disagree with you Autumn but alienware are prone to problems the Asus that was linked is a VERY good buy but if you cant afford go with Toshiba or ugh HP stay far far far away from Acer and gateway they really are shit. Check out newegg for good deals on Pcs

For$700 bucks you could make and Alienware computer. The parts are cheap these days. Plus if you build it you know exactly whats in there. I myself prefer a desktop because it can be upgraded.

The Laptop I was using was a Presario F500.
Everquest barely ran on 1 gig of ram.
What I think happened was I overheated the GPU too many times running EQ, and I got the BLACK SCREEN OF DEATH.
I will attempt a repair of said Laptop, because it belongs to my mother, who now insists the problem was my fault and that I should buy her a nice brand new computer or tablet.

I just bought a new laptop
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834314149
It will kick serious ass, oh, and run EQ just fine too.
It will arrive Friday, so I should be back up and running Friday Night or Saturday at the latest.
Some stats in brief:
Intel Core i7-4702MQ 2.2GHz
Screen 17.3"
Memory Size 8GB DDR3
Memory Slot (Total) 4
Max Memory Supported 32GB
Hard Disk 1TB
Optical Drive DVD Super Multi
Graphics Card NVIDIA Geforce GT 750M
Video Memory 4GB
------------------------------------------------------------------------
I spent only $949.99 on this, and overnight shipping was 43.25 (Taxes were 79.46)
TOTAL: $1,072.70
This computer should last me a while

The first company I ordered it from, Adorama, had two problems. First they could not get authorization to use my debit card because of insufficient funds. I got a cash advance from another credit card, and deposited it into the account so the money issue would be solved. But then I talked to a customer service representative who said that the laptop was on back order and would not be available from the manufacturer until two weeks into September.
Therefore, I contacted Newegg and verified they have those same laptops in stock and I ordered one from them, actually saving on about $70 of taxes. Total cost now is $1,001.66. It would have been less than one grand but I asked for a $2.99 fee to expedite the order process so they should (hopefully) ship it today for a delivery tomorrow.
I also verified it would come with an A/C power adapter. Very important if I wish to play for more than 2.5 hours at a stretch.
I did get in trouble with my boss for shopping online, so I am being much more discreat now. Doesn't he know how important EQ is???

I have not received word it has shipped yet. I am hoping they will ship it in the next few hours and they just haven't gotten around to emailing me the tracking number.
I do hope I receive it tomorrow.
If shipping is delayed I may have to go a whole weekend without a computer. OMG what will I do? GO OUT DOORS?!?!?!
